It's time to get fit - Diari de Tarragona

With the end of Christmas not only come the sales. It is time to focus on the purposes of the new year and leave behind the bad things of 2018. In many cases is committed to a physical change, always better, understanding the canons of beauty that predominate. Perhaps for this reason, January is the August of the gymnasiums, the time of the year when more people join, either as a purpose, with a view to summer or simply to break the routine. Of course, going to the gym requires a physical and psychological effort not to park after the first laces.

For someone who takes time without exercising or going to the gym, it is not a simple change. It involves finding a couple of gaps in the weekly agenda, beating the laziness that hooks us to the couch like a magnet or having patience to get results, as well as an economic investment.

It also entails positive contributions such as feeling better about yourself, both in health and in your mind, looking better in the mirror, socializing with people who share that common effort and having an escape route to forget what is needed during a little while. Like everything in life, it is a balance of pros and cons. The final decision to decant it to one side or another only has it to oneself.

Daniel Figuerola, director of Viding Sant Jordi in Tarragona, explains that «January is the month that most people sign up. After parties people want to lose weight and are also encouraged by New Year"s resolutions ». “Whether to burn the excesses of Christmas or have a healthier life,” Figuerola continues, “we try to set goals by trimesters, so that the client can assess their progress and find the exercises that they like the most.”

So that the clients of January avoid throwing in the towel at the first exchange, the director of Viding Sant Jordi comments that «it is important that they are comfortable, that a climate of club and family is generated. The idea is that, whether they have never been in a gym or rejoined, they are in the center for a long period of time. “

This formula includes an important variant, patience: «It is linked to the achievement of results. To make it more placid is key that people feel comfortable and motivated. If the advice of the instructors is followed and it is constant, the results will arrive ». On the other hand, Ricardo Oliveros, owner of Snap Fitness, with centers in Reus and Tarragona, says that “when this time comes, people set a goal, usually related to looking good for the summer, so they are customers who they tend to endure a lot ».

It"s not just about being physically good, people are also valued more and more in good health. «They understand it as an investment in health. It has changed the last years. Now people prefer to go to supervised classes or take a personal trainer before having a reduction massage, “says Oliveros.

So that people do not get discouraged, Oliveros also gives importance to personal treatment: «You have to know what the objective is, assess whether it is realistic and follow up. They prefer to go their own way or follow a routine, you have to give them special attention to keep them motivated. ” “The comparison must be with oneself,” says Oliveros. We work with close and achievable objectives. If you are a person who has not exercised in a long time, we recommend that you come two or three days a week. You have to combine it with your private life and if you"re not used to it, it"s better that you go from less to more than not from more to less ».

Valuing age and fitness

About the people who have not exercised for some time and plan to get fit, the UOC Health Sciences professor, Alicia Aguilar, says that it is important to personalize the objectives because “you have to assess the age and the physical form. “There are general recommendations, such as those of the World Health Organization (WHO),” he explains, “but to personalize these recommendations it is important to go to a professional and assess each case in a specific way.”

For his part, the professor of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the UOC, Manuel Armayones, recommends not to consider too ambitious an objective: «We can not expect to run thirty minutes if we did not do anything before. Why do not we start with five minutes? We got off the bus one stop earlier and we walked a while ».
